Vermeil and 18-carat gold: what's the difference?

Working with gold is a commitment. Working with vermeil, the right choice. At the workshop, both materials are approached with the same exacting standards.

Here, we take the time to look back at their specific characteristics and the way in which we, at Monsieur Paris, look at precious materials.

Gold: a precious metal in its noblest form

Gold is a rare metal, sought after for its stability, longevity and timeless brilliance. At Monsieur Paris, we use only 18-carat recycled gold, certified by the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC). This choice reflects our commitment to responsible jewelry that respects resources and know-how.18-carat gold contains 75% pure gold, combined with metals such as silver and copper to guarantee strength and durability. Unlike 24-carat gold, which is too malleable for everyday wear, it offers the perfect balance between nobility of material and durability.

Why 18-carat gold?

There are several "grades" of gold, depending on their pure gold content:

- 24 carats (99.9% gold): too soft for everyday jewelry.

- 18 carats (75% gold): the standard for fine jewelry, durable and radiant.

- 14 carats (58.5%) or 9 carats (37.5%): more economical, but less precious.

At Monsieur Paris, we've made the exclusive choice of 18-carat gold. For its quality, for its strength, but also for what it embodies: demanding craftsmanship, made to last.

Vermeil: a precious and responsible alternative

Vermeil is a precious metal recognized by French law. It is composed of solid silver (925 thousandths), coated with a thick layer of 18-carat gold, at least 5 microns thick.

At Monsieur Paris, this gilding is carried out in Paris, in a partner workshop selected for its exacting standards and mastery of the gesture. The rendering of vermeil is very similar to that of solid gold: the same warm hue, the same subtle shine. It makes it possible to offer precious-looking pieces at a more affordable price.

Care: how to preserve your jewelry

- Jewelry in 18-carat gold: it can be worn every day, even underwater. Gold does not oxidize or tarnish. A simple wipe with a soft cloth is all it takes to revive its shine.

- Silver-gilt jewelry: more care is needed. Avoid water, perfumes, cosmetics and prolonged rubbing. When you're not wearing them, store them in their case or a cloth pouch, away from moisture.

We offer an in-shop maintenance service to restore the brilliance of your jewelry, whether in gold or vermeil.

Two materials, one requirement

Whether you choose gold or vermeil, each piece of Monsieur Paris jewelry is designed with the same rigour: a refined design, handcrafted workmanship and a direct link to the workshop.

Our mission: to bring to life artisanal excellence, driven by the hand of the craftswoman and the nobility of the materials.
